Acquisition history
Tandberg Television, originally with headquarters in Oslo, Norway, was formed in 1979 when the original Tandberg company split into Tandberg, Tandberg Data, and Tandberg Television. In 1999 TANDBERG Television entered into an agreement to acquire all the assets of NDS' Digital-TV products business, the Digital Broadcasting Business (DBB), a subsidiary of The News Corporation group. The acquisition brought to TANDBERG Television an industry leading provider of digital video compression encoders, multiplexers and modulation products; strengthening its position in the global market for large satellite DTH systems, terrestrial networks and mobile news gathering solutions. The £170 million deal was financed partly by cash and partly by the issue of TANDBERG Television shares.Over the last 3 years, TANDBERG Television has strategically acquired four U.S-based digital media companies to create a global force in advanced compression systems, on-demand and interactive television. In December 2004 TANDBERG Television acquired Atlanta-based N2 Broadband, a leading provider of open-platform solutions for video-on-demand, to expand its North America market presence, strengthen its relationships with U.S. cable providers and bring together best in class open systems based hardware and software solutions.By October 2005, TANDBERG Television continued to lead the industry into a new television era through the acquisition of Los Angeles-based Goldpocket Interactive, an interactive technology provider for digital television, the Internet and wireless/mobile networks. Through this acquisition, TANDBERG Television broadened its software solutions and provided content owners, operators and advertisers with a non-proprietary environment for the creation and delivery of interactive consumer applications across cable, satellite, telco and mobile platforms. In February 2006, TANDBERG Television acquired SkyStream Networks, a leader in IP video delivery solutions based in Sunnyvale, CA. SkyStream's low cost, high-density video headends for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC proved to be a valuable extension to TANDBERG Television's industry-leading compression solutions. In addition, SkyStream's content delivery software for push on-demand complimented TANDBERG Television's on-demand offering. In August 2006, TANDBERG Television announced the acquisition of Los Angeles-based Internet TV software developer, Zetools. In an effort to unite existing on-demand and interactive solutions with Zetools' Internet TV publishing platform, TANDBERG Television increased its ability to give a robust end-to-end solution for publishing, distributing and monetizing video content across any platform to any digital device. In April 2007, TANDBERG Television was acquired by Ericsson (NASDQ - ERIC), a leading provider of telecommunications equipment and related services to mobile and fixed network operators globally. The combination brings substantial benefits to both Ericsson and TANDBERG Television's broadcast and network customers, who face significant revenue-generating opportunities in the roll-out of new video-based consumer services. Ericsson and TANDBERG Television's technologies and expertise are key enablers in the drive to create and deliver these new services across any platform to any device™. TANDBERG Television operates as an independent entity within the Ericsson Business Unit Multimedia.
