Unitrends

Unitrends is a privately held company founded by Steve Schwartz, headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. It is financially backed by The Trelys Funds, The Aurora Funds, and Harbert Venture Partners. The company produces backup related software and hardware aimed at delivering value to small and medium businesses.

Products

CTAR™

Introduced as a product in 1989, CTAR was initially developed to handle the data backup problems encountered at the company's founder's medical office. CTAR is no longer supported and the company has moved their technology to focusing on the Data Protection Unit instead.

Bare Metal Plus™

In 1990, Unitrends introduced the industry's first bare metal recovery product. Bare Metal Plus allows a system to be backed up while running or booted into the Bare Metal Plus environment and backed up at a disk-level to a Data Protection Unit. In addition, booting the system from Bare Metal Plus allows a system to be restored if an operating system failure were to occur reducing server down-time to typically under an hour.

Backup Professional™

Backup Professional is the company's client software that allows a system to be backed up or restored from a Data Protection Unit.

Data Protection Unit™

In 2002, the company released the Data Protection Unit (DPU), a fully integrated disk-to-disk backup appliance supporting over 24 operating systems as well as proprietary products such as Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange. The DPUs can be used as part of a disk-to-disk-to-tape information lifecycle management strategy, as well as in disk-to-disk-to-disk approaches through the use of their archiving feature, developed in order to overcome tape's boundaries and lifespan. The units support encryption, so that all backups can be encrypted before being written to disk or transferred to any archived storage, enhancing physical security.

RX9™

RX9 is a patent-pending, high-performance data-compression technology integrated into the company's Data Protection Units.

Distribution

Early in 2006, Unitrends announced the immediate appointment of Sentral Systems Ltd. as the company's distributor in the United Kingdom for its Rapid Recovery™ systems. The announcement marks Unitrends' first major expansion into the international market, and is consistent with its strategic growth plan to deliver a powerful, turnkey appliance to the SMB market that protects their data and their systems, allowing them to get back in business quickly when their systems inevitably fail.
